Pallet Rack Installation Checklist: What to Prepare Before Installers Arrive
A practical pallet rack installation checklist: layout drawings, permits, slab and anchoring, load plaques, flue spaces, forklift access, tear-down of existing racks, and final inspection.
A smooth rack install is mostly decided before the installers arrive. Use this checklist to prepare your warehouse so the crew can work safely and your system goes into service on schedule.
1. Finalize the layout and drawings
- Approved layout with aisle widths matched to your lift trucks.
- Elevation drawings with beam levels and load capacities per level.
- Rack specifications from the manufacturer — the industry design standard in the U.S. is ANSI MH16.1, published by the Rack Manufacturers Institute.
2. Check permits and fire-code requirements
Many jurisdictions require a building permit for storage racks, and high-piled storage may need fire-marshal review. Sprinkler design can affect rack layout, including the flue spaces that must stay open between back-to-back rows and between pallets. Confirm requirements with your local building and fire officials before the install date.
3. Evaluate the slab
- Know the slab thickness and condition where uprights will land.
- Identify in-floor heat, conduit, or other embedded items before anchors are drilled.
- Note un-level areas — installers will shim to keep uprights plumb.
4. Clear the floor and plan deliveries
- Empty and clean the installation area.
- Schedule material deliveries so components arrive in the order they’ll be installed.
- Reserve a staging area near the work.
5. Plan equipment and access
Installers need lifts and room to maneuver. Confirm who supplies forklifts and aerial lifts, door and dock access times, and any areas that must stay operational during the work.
6. Remove the old system (if any)
If existing racking is coming out, plan tear-down first. Properly dismantled and packaged rack can be relocated or resold; damaged components should be scrapped, not reused.
7. Installation essentials
- Uprights anchored to the slab per the drawings.
- Beams fully seated with safety locks engaged.
- Row spacers, wire decking, and column protectors installed where specified.
- Uprights plumb and level within tolerance.
8. Load plaques and final inspection
Post load-capacity plaques where operators can see them, walk the system with the installer, and document any punch-list items. Train your team to report rack damage, and schedule periodic inspections.

Frequently asked questions
Do pallet racks need a permit?
Often, yes — many jurisdictions require a building permit for storage racks above a certain height, and fire officials may review high-piled storage. Check with your local building department before installation.
How long does pallet rack installation take?
It depends on the number of bays, height, and site conditions. A prepared, clear floor with materials on site is the biggest factor in a fast install.
Should pallet racks be anchored?
Yes. Upright frames are anchored to the slab per the manufacturer’s instructions and the engineered drawings.
